چکیده

A correlation between the surface density of foreground galaxies tracing the Large Scale Structure and the position of distant galaxies and quasars is expected from the magnification bias effect (Canizares 1981). We show that this foreground–background correlation function wfb can be used as a straightforward and almost model-free method to measure the cosmological ratio Ω/b. For samples with appropriate redshift distributions, wfb ∝ Ω < δg >, where δ and g are respectively the foreground dark matter and galaxy surface density fluctuations. Therefore, Ω/b ∝ wfb/w, where w ≡< gg > is the foreground galaxy angular two-point correlation function, b is the biasing factor, and the proportionality factor is independent of the dark matter power spectrum. Simple estimations show that the application of this method to the galaxy and quasar samples generated by the upcoming Sloan Sky Digital Survey will achieve a highly accurate and well resolved measurement of the ratio Ω/b. Clustering of Faint Galaxies: ω(θ), Induced by Weak Gravitational Lensing

Weak gravitational lensing by large scale structure affects the number counts of faint galaxies through the “magnification bias” and thus affects the measurement of the angular two-point correlation function ω(θ). At faint magnitudes the clustering amplitude will decrease differently with limiting magnitude than expected from Limber’s equation. The amplitude will hit a minimum and then rise wit...

2 00 3 Detection of dark matter Skewness in the VIRMOS - DESCART survey

Weak gravitational lensing provides a direct statistical measure of the dark matter distribution. The variance is easiest to measure, which constrains the degenerate product σ8Ω . The degeneracy is broken by measuring the skewness arising from the fact that densities must remain positive, which is not possible when the initially symmetric perturbations become non-linear. Skewness measures the n...

Simulating Weak Lensing by Clusters and Large-scale Structure

Selected results on estimating cosmological parameters from simulated weak lensing data with noise are presented. Numerical simulations of ray tracing through N-body simulations have been used to generate shear and convergence maps due to lensing by large-scale structure. Noise due to the intrinsic ellipticities of a finite number of galaxies is added. In this contribution we present our main r...

Weak Lensing Study of Low Mass Galaxy Groups : Implications for Ω

We report on the first measurement of the average mass and mass-to-light ratio of galaxy groups by analysing the weak lensing signal induced by these systems. The groups, which have velocity dispersions of 50-400 km/s, have been selected from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (CNOC2). This survey allows the identification of a large number of groups w...

The Effect of Weak Gravitational Lensing on the Angular Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts

If Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are cosmologically distributed standard candles and are associated with the luminous galaxies, then the observed angular distribution of all GRBs is altered due to weak gravitational lensing of bursts by density inhomogeneities. The amplitude of the effect is generally small. For example, if the current catalogs extend to zmax ∼ 1 and we live in a flat Ω = 1 Universe,...
